I am a Consultant Surgeon in Ear Nose and Throat (Otolaryngology) and specialise in Head and Neck (H&N) cancer assessment and treatment within a multidisciplinary team in my NHS practice. Head and Neck (H&N) cancer includes cancers of the tonsils, throat and voicebox.
I run a weekly rapid access neck lump clinic and I specialise in the investigation and treatment of neck lumps including thyroid nodules and enlarged lymph nodes. I see patients with hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing at the level of the throat, and painful throats. I perform in office flexible nasolaryngoscopy, which is a camera inserted in the nose to examine the nose, throat and voicebox.
I also see general ENT referrals including blocked nose, nasal polyps and sinus symptoms, hearing loss and patients suffering from vertigo. I run a vocal cord medialisation clinic to help with rehabilitation of patients with paralysed voicebox.
I am an active member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) ENT Surgical Specialty Board.Â
I am the ENTUK Patient Information Lead providing up to date information about ENT conditions and surgeries. This project aims to provide this information in an accessible format with high quality ethnically diverse illustrations, with an excellent readability score, and sustainable for the enviroment by providing digital e-leaflets with QR codes instead of printed leaflets/booklets.
I am a member of the British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists (BAHNO) International Collaboration Committee with the aim of providing opportunities to ENT doctors from developing countries with an interest in H&N cancer to attend UK H&N cancer conferences and spending time in a specialist H&N cancer unit.
I teach on national courses including the ENT masterclass on Airway Emergency, the Transnasal Endoscopy course for Gastroenterologists, RCSEd Essentials in Robotics course and H&N dissection courses.
Leadership and innovation: In my NHS practice, have set up the Trans-Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) programme and am the TORS lead for South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust from January 2016. I am past H&N cancer lead at South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation NHS Trust and the past chair of the Head & Neck multidisciplinary team (MDT) 2017-2021. I have set up and have run the Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy emergency airway management workshop for the Trust with my ICCU colleague.
I am an active member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) ENT Surgical Specialty Board. I am the H&N representative on the RCSEd Robotic Taskforce and am a contributing author for the RCSEd guidelines 'Development of new robotic surgical services: A guide to good practice'.
