Virtual consultations:
I specialise in soft tissue knee reconstruction, knee arthroplasty, foot surgery and trauma surgery.
Since qualifying with honours from Newcastle Medical School in 1990, I have pursued a career in orthopaedic surgery. Having trained as a specialist registrar in the northern region I developed an interest in knee surgery and trauma surgery, especially soft tissue injuries around the knee. In order to pursue this interest further I underwent a fellowship in knee and sports medicine at the Brisbane Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre in Brisbane, Australia. Over there I learned new techniques for arthroscopic knee surgery, including ligament reconstruction, meniscal repair and articular surface defect resurfacing. I also had the chance to look after several elite sportsmen while acting as part of the orthopaedic team for the Queensland Reds (rugby union), Brisbane Broncos (rugby league) and the Brisbane Bullets (basketball).
In conjunction with the physiotherapy department at the University of Queensland I undertook research projects relating to ACL reconstruction, rehabilitation and shoulder stabilisation. After, I completed a fellowship in trauma surgery at the Hospital of Special Surgery in New York under the trauma surgeon David Helfet. I have now taken up a consultant appointment at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Sunderland Royal Hospital
Having been brought up and educated in Whitley Bay I have been lucky to obtain a consultant post in the North East. I have been an avid sports fan all my life, playing football, cricket and hockey at school and university and I still play for a local Sunday league football team. I have taken part in the Great North Run several times and still hold out hopes of completing a marathon. I have taken this interest in sport into my professional practice, specialising in sports medicine and knee surgery. I also enjoy reading, travelling, diving and skiing.
