CQC maintains Spire Washington Hospital rating as 'Good'

11 May 2020

  • Staff praised for providing good, prompt care and treatment
  • Inspectors note areas of outstanding practice in providing educational sessions for local GPs across the region
  • 88% of all Spire’s 39 UK hospitals are rated as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding'

Spire Washington has retained its ‘Good’ rating, following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors carried out an unannounced examination into services offered at the 36-bed hospital in December 2019, and inspected the diagnostic imaging service in February 2020. They concluded that the facility should be rated ‘Good’ overall.

The CQC cited as an area of outstanding practice the hospital’s provision of educational sessions on ‘hot topics’ to local GPs. It said this demonstrated a commitment to improving outcomes for patients by working with external organisations.

The report noted that patients were able to access care promptly, when they needed it. It commended the hospital for planning and providing care in a way that met the needs of local people, while working with others in the wider healthcare system.

Inspectors noted that staff treated patients with compassion and kindness, respected their privacy and dignity and provided emotional support to minimise distress.

The report also highlighted good, visible leadership at the hospital and noted how patients were supported to make decisions about their care. Complaints and concerns were treated seriously and any lessons learned were shared with all staff.

John Lofthouse, Spire’s Business Unit Director for the North, commented: “Our team is thrilled to hear that Spire Washington has maintained its ‘Good’ rating. It reflects the hard work and dedication put in by colleagues across the hospital to provide high quality care and advice for all patients, their family members and carers.

“We continuously strive to adapt and improve our service to deliver care that is of a consistently high standard. We’re delighted that the report acknowledged the future vision we have for our hospital and the strategy we have mapped out on how to get there.”

The hospital provides a range of inpatient and outpatient elective services, including surgery, termination of pregnancy, and diagnostic imaging.
