Dr James Ahlquist

I am a Physician with a specialist expertise in endocrinology, diabetes and general medicine. My clinical practice includes all aspects of general endocrinology, including disorders of the thyroid, pituitary, parathyroid, pancreas and adrenal glands and also reproductive disorders.

I trained in Bristol, Birmingham and Oxford and also worked at Massachusetts General Hospital (USA). I have worked as a Consultant in Southend since 1995, and also do regional clinics in Essex and London.

Endocrinology is about hormone disorders. The most common conditions are thyroid disease, reproductive matters and problems with calcium balance. Pituitary disease is less common and this is an area where I have a particular expertise. Endocrinology also includes disease of the adrenal glands and pancreas, and some uncommon genetic disorders.

Diabetes is an increasing problem in our community, and routine care often requires some specialist input. People with diabetes often have concerns about choice of treatment, the complications of diabetes and what the future holds and I am able to provide information and care to patients with this condition.
