I qualified in medicine in 1986 at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School. After completing basic surgical training I obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1990. This was followed by two years in full-time research into the treatment of bowel cancer at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London and led to a Master of Surgery degree in 1995.

After that I spent a period in higher surgical training in which I developed my interests in bowel and laparoscopic surgery. During this time I worked at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Kingston Hospital and St Mark's Hospital as well as spending periods abroad studying surgery at the Mayo Clinic in the USA and in Australia.

I was appointed as a consultant general surgeon at Southend Hospital NHS Trust in 1998 and at the same time started my private practice at the Spire Wellesley Hospital.

My specialist areas of interest are bowel surgery and laparoscopic surgery, including hernia repair. I specialise in the investigation of bowel problems by endoscopy. My experience in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery has led to me being recognised as a National Trainer for Consultant Surgeons in laparoscopic surgery.

I organise and run laparoscopic courses at Anglia Ruskin University and the ICENI Centre in Colchester, as well as having been invited to teach and speak at national and overseas meetings.

I welcome appropriate patients wishing to refer and pay for treatment themselves without the need for a GPs letter of referral.

Below is feedback from some of my patients at Spire Wellesley Hospital:

'I have visited my consultant on several occasions and every time, he has shown care and consideration towards me. He knew that I was worried about my condition and suggested that I have the procedure, just to make sure I was ok and my mind could be put at ease. I have recommended him on many occasions'

'Friendly, informative and reassuring'

'The consultant seemed very knowledgeable and explained my procedure fully'
