Mr Shahrier Sarker

Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeon

MBBS MSc (Ortho Engr) FRCS (Trauma & Ortho)

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeon based at Broomfield Hospital, with a keen interest in implant design, medical education, new surgical techniques and research.

I graduated from the National University of Singapore and always wanted to pursue a career in Orthopaedic Surgery. After moving to the UK in 2009 I completed my Trauma and Orthopaedic Training in Health Education East of England having worked in prestigious units such as Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. I then undertook a highly sought after fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust learning complex management of elective and trauma hand and wrist surgery under the tutelage of both orthopaedic and plastic hand surgeons.

I have a Masters in Orthopaedic Engineering and am currently completing the British Society for Hand Surgery Diploma in Hand Surgery.

I am very active in charity work and sit on the BSSH Overseas Committee and am part of the executive community for the BSSH Overseas Project in Bangladesh where I am working with local surgeons to help develop hand surgery as a specialty.

I am an avid educator and currently teach on many courses for junior surgeons. I am educational lead for orthopaedic junior doctors and the department lead for medical students from QMUL and ARU at Broomfield Hospital. I teach on courses at Royal College of Surgeons of England and am faculty member of the Advanced Trauma Life Support course and the Excellence in Surgical Supervision course.

I have recently been awarded a BSSH funded position for the British Orthopaedic Association Future Leaders Programme where I am developing a complex wrist unit at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

I have written a book chapter on thumb injuries and conditions, have numerous publications in scientific journals, have presented at conferences nationally and internationally.
