Mr Tony McGilligan

Consultant ENT Surgeon

FRCS (Ed), FRCS Eng (Otol), FRCS (ORL-HNS)

Specialises in

  • Nasal surgery
  • Sinus surgery
  • Hearing and tinnitus problems
  • Sleep disorders
  • Thyroid problems

I trained at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School London and completed training in surgery to acquire FRCS in General Surgery and ENT postgraduate training in North Thames (St Mary’s, Bart’s, Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital and Charing Cross) completing a research fellowship in Boston at MIT and New England Medical Center as well as a clinical fellowship at the Royal Marsden.

The time at MIT was spent developing early cancer diagnostic and treatment techniques using lasers. I enjoyed a sabbatical at Great Ormond St Hospital renewing friendships and professional ties with some of the world's top paediatric ENT surgeons.

Since being appointed at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in 2000, I have continued a busy clinical and academic practice having been invited to lecture at numerous venues including New York, San Antonio, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Cannes, Naples, Marrakech, Istanbul and other centres throughout Europe and North Africa.

Currently, I am an examiner for the Intercollegiate MRCS board of the Royal Colleges of Surgery of the British Isles; I now also examine for the European Board Examination in Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery.

In Brighton I conduct the undergraduate ENT teaching programme at BSMS and am part of the RCS education department for overseeing national standards in undergraduate teaching of ENT.

I see both adult and paediatric patients (note paediatric service is not currently available at The Montefiore Hospital) and provide experience and insight derived from a career honed both in the UK and overseas.

Although I see the full extent of ENT, I specialise in sinus surgery - an area in which I regularly collaborate with both ophthalmology and neurosurgery colleagues in the treatment of challenging eye problems and brain tumours.
