I am a Knee and Hip Arthroplasty and Sports Knee Surgeon. I have practised as a consultant for over 17 years, and have undertaken over 5,000 knee and hip joint replacements including over 450 partial knee replacements, which allows a person to function at a higher level with a more natural-feeling and functioning knee.

I am double fellowship trained in Arthroplasty of knees and hip, Partial Knee Replacements and Sports Knee Injuries and Surgery.

My area of special interest is Partial Knee Replacements where I have published outcomes.

I am very passionate about ‘zero tolerance’ in case of prosthetic joint infection among other things to achieve an optimal outcome for all my patients. I am an active listener and believe in true ‘shared decision making’ with my patients. I explain and set expectations at a realistic achievable level, leading to a high percentage of my patients achieving a highly satisfying outcome as evidenced by my National Joint Registry data, Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and patient feedback on various sites such as Doctify and I Want Great Care.

My NHS base hospital is Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS Trust, where I have practiced since 2016.

I am the lead for clinical audit and effectiveness, clinical governance, surgical site infection and co-ordinator of the lower limb group meetings.

I completed my undergraduate training from Magadh University, India (1991) and came to the UK in 1993 to undertake a comprehensive postgraduate training programme. I completed basic surgical training rotation at Aberdeen Hospital, Scotland and successfully passed the FRCS Ed in 1996. I completed the West Midlands Trauma and Orthopaedic higher surgical rotation (1998-2004), during which time I completed a two year part-time diploma in orthopaedic engineering from Cardiff University (2001).

I completed my FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics) in 2002 and have undertaken two fellowship posts, a lower limb arthroplasty fellowship (2004/5), and a knee soft tissue and arthroplasty fellowship at Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Southmead Hospital (2009/10), with two consultants covering the full spectrum of knee surgery including cartilage, soft tissue, ligaments, partial knee replacements, revision knee surgery including use of mega prosthesis. It is one of the two high volume and pioneering centres of unicompartmental knee replacement in UK and the unit with the maximum volume of lateral unicompartmental replacement. My research topic was effect of age and BMI on the longevity of unicompartmental knee replacement and I presented my findings at the Combined Orthopaedic Meeting in Glasgow, 2010.

I keep my knowledge and skills updated by attending specialist society meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars and discussions with my peers. I also teach at registrar training workshops and GP training days.

I have a number of publications and have accumulated vast experience practicing within the independent sector at Emerson’s Green NHS Treatment Centre, Bristol (Jan 2011 - Dec 2016). Under my Clinical Leadership (2013-2016), the centre was voted ‘Best in the West” for total hip replacement in the South West region in 2013 as determined by patient reported outcome measures (PROMS). I introduced partial knee replacement in that unit. It was an elective high volume surgery centre with emphasis on providing a truly patient-centred care. I did over 100 total knee and total hip replacements, over 50 UKR’s, over 250 knee arthroscopies and over 30 ACL reconstruction per year for the six years I was there, with very satisfactory results as evidenced by my NJR outcomes.

In my spare time I enjoy cycling and mountain biking with my son, playing cricket in my personal nets in the back garden and enjoying holidays involving hikes and adventurous activities.

As a teenager I also did Shotokan Karate for a few years, played cricket for my regions (size of UK) under 15 cricket team and endured my fair share of sporting injuries and I can fully relate and empathize with the people I get to see and treat.
